Potty Training Your Child with Praise & Rewards

“Please try, honey. Mommy will stay right here to help. You’re such a big boy! Mommy uses the potty, daddy uses the potty and now it’s your turn to use the potty! You have your very own potty! Isn’t that fun? Exciting? Exasperating?” How many times have you pleaded, cajoled, and had that face to face serious conversation with your three year old toddler about the joys of using the potty? If you’ve tried everything to help and you feel as though your toddler is winning the battle of the potty perhaps it’s time for a change. Rewards and praise may be the tickets you need to pass go and get on the potty express.

Praise for jobs well done should be second nature. It’s just too easy to see the “bad stuff” children do when in reality they’re doing a lot more “good stuff” then we give credit for. When it’s time to introduce the potty to your toddler, give it a sunny spin. Make it sound wonderful to be old enough to sit on the potty chair. Help and show your toddler how to sit down on the potty fully clothed. Let your toddler sit and get used to the feel of the potty. Shower your toddler with praise if he or she sits for a bit. After your toddler has grown accustomed to the feel of the potty chair, it’s time to take off the diaper.

Sometimes the feel of the cold potty seat is uncomfortable, but keep trying to get your toddler to just sit on the potty with diaper off. Each time your toddler sits on the potty chair, praise them with words and high fives. Now would be an excellent time to start with a reward system in order to increase your toddler's involvement and maintain their interest.

Teaching and helping your toddler to use the potty can be very frustrating and no one way works for all toddlers. Finding what works best for you and your toddler may be a trial and error process, but rewards and praise may be the keys that get your toddler potty trained.
